The exhibition offers the first-ever opportunity to experience Emil Schumacher’s black gouaches from the 1980s and 90s in a specially designed configuration. The dark sheets are the artist’s impressive variations on handmade black paper and contain a further element that is not readily obvious at first glance: light.
Landscapes shrouded in darkness, as well as completely free compositions of abstract painting, appear on the dark expanse of the black background in nuances from subtly shimmering to radiant brightness. By using mainly black, white and silver paint, sparsely applied blue or yellow become special highlights.
