EMIL SCHUMACHER
MACCHERONI LATINO
- GOUACHES FROM ITALY
After the first application of paint onto the as yet untouched surface, a dialogic dispute with the evolving piece leads the painter Emil Schumacher to a continuing struggle for the picture. Schumacher watches his works – despite all spontaneity – very closely during their evolvement. He pauses in order to check what has already been achieved, to add to it, to correct it, sometimes to discard it and start fresh. The textures found in the handmade paper of the series Maccheroni-Latino, with its cryptic texts in an old language and handwritten letters provided Schumacher at once with a target and a challenge to start painting. The artistic dialog with the pages of the old folio leaves them their secrets, while at the same time turning them into something newly-created.
